In addition to our traditional chiropractic and physical therapy treatments, we utilize many other modalities to help reduce pain and restore function. These modalities can also help increase circulation, decrease swelling, improve strength and increase range of motion. This allows a return to an active and unrestricted life full of purpose and freedom from pain. A few of the modalities we utilize at QOMC include:
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical muscle stimulation helps increase muscle strength, decrease muscle spasm and promotes improves blood supply to the targeted area to promote healing. This allows oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the area for tissue healing, as well as the removal of waste products from the injured site. Types of electrical muscle stimulation include:
- Interferential electrical stimulation
- Premodulated electrical stimulation
- Russian electrical stimulation
- Biphasic electrical stimulation
- High volt electrical stimulation
- Microcurrent electrical stimulation
Ultrasound utilizes high and/or low frequency sound waves to penetrate deep into the targeted tissues and muscles to cause warming and relaxation effect to help relax muscle stiffness, spasm and minimize scar tissue formation. By utilizing high frequency sound waves, ultrasound promotes vessel vasodilatation (enlargement) to increase circulation and assist healing. In lower frequencies, the machine will help decrease tissue inflammation. Types of ultrasound therapy include:
- Ultrasound (continuous or pulsed)
- Ultrasound/electrical stimulation combination therapy
Mechanical and Manual Traction
Traction involves the application of tension to a specific area in order to give a stretch to specific tissues. This helps to decrease muscle spasm, nerve pressure, and increase range of motion (mobility).
These modalities are an added therapeutic benefit that will complement the case management plan that you and your therapist or doctor have designed to attain your health goals.
